Jillian Michaels: ‘I Really Dislike Working Out’

The Biggest Loser trainer Jillian Michaelsbody is so bangin’, she must love hitting the gym — right?


“I really dislike working out,” she tells PEOPLE at the launch event for her new 30-minute interval class at Curves gyms. “No matter what I’m doing, whether it’s yoga or spinning or even my Curves circuit class, I’m like, ‘Mother of God!’ It’s hard. And there’s never a moment where it’s hard and I’m going, ‘Oh, I just love this!’ Everything hurts.”

So what motivates her to get moving? “I tell myself that I love my skinny jeans. I love playing with my kids. And I don’t mean watching them play, I mean playing with them,” she says.

When it comes to exercise, Michaels says that everyone — regardless of fitness level — should work out at least four days a week for 30 minutes at a time. And if you fall off the wagon, climb right back on.

“If you get a flat tire, you don’t get out of the car and slash all three other tires,” she says. “You fix the flat and you keep going. So you missed [a workout] today. Control your diet a little bit better and go tomorrow. It’s that simple,” she says.

To make things as easy as possible, she keeps a stock of meals in her freezer for nights when she needs a “quick and easy” dinner, making sure each meal has fewer than 500 calories. “If you know, ‘I’m not making it to the gym today,’ well, don’t have a bottle of wine with your buddy and go out for Italian food that night. You just mitigate it and you jump back on the wagon.”

“I explain to [my daughter] why we eat healthy [foods], and I incentivize them,” she says. “So for example, she loves Katy Perry, and I’ll say … ‘she roars better with kale! Katy Perry loves this!’ And so she’s like, ‘Mom, does Katy Perry like this?’ I’m like, ‘She hates pizza, honey.'”

But it’s not all about pop stars: “I also tell her, ‘I want you to grow up tall, I want you to grow up strong.’ She totally gets that.”

I hope someone tells this woman that making food a reward or associating it with being bad is a surefire way to inspire disordered eating in a child. Everything is ok in moderation, you can have some dessert if you eat your veggies, don’t have pizza all the time. Exercise can be fun and feel good, if it’s all pain for someone like her she’s probably pushing way too hard.

I love her, and her realistic way of dealing with life. I love to workout…or maybe I should clarify, I love the feeling AFTER a good workout, its empowering! I’m also a Beachbody coach, so I try to be a product of the product. Lately, I’ve fallen in love wtih the Focus T25 and Shaun T…its tough, but I keep telling myself, its ONLY 25 minutes. Beginning to think of food more as fuel now as well…it can all be a battle, if you make it into one. I’m choosing healthy, for the same reasons Jillian has…except mine is to run and play WITH my GRANDKIDS!! Nothing feels better. #BeHealthyBeHappy #GoingTheDistance #CoachToni

I seriously like Jillian Michaels after all these yrs she’s really turned my body into awesome you feel the difference instantly i would go to the gym classes and everything do the treadmill but she knows the secrets and really knows what she’s doing as far as some of you disliking her because of whatever made up reason maybe it’s because your not happy unhappy dislike others for no reason i am fully content because i eat better work out with my husband and life is much brighter because inside and out i’m ok go take a walk around the block for those who continue to throw hate out

If you dislike her, it’s because you’re feeling guilty about your own lifestyle and those extra pounds you’re carrying. To make yourself feel better, you try and bring her down. Instead of that, get off your fat butt and start exercising as well as watching your diet. Her advice is pretty good actually.

She is awesome! The only reason she has people that don’t like her is because she is lesbian. Lets be honest: that is why, she is smart and she’s not struggling like you and I with bills etc….so the joke is on you.

Also: through her videos, I am changing, I am becoming a better person inside and out. It’s only been a week since I started working out to her videos, but I can already feel a difference and she introduced yoga to me. I LOVE HER 👍❤💚💜💙💛

I Love Jillian Michaels and everything she stands for. Her no nonsense workouts and sensible, healthy eating plan have enabled me to lose 70 pounds and I am still going strong to lose 35 more. All of you haters out there, geesh, get a life and leave a comment on an article that you DO like. But that is probably nothing since it sounds like you really hate yourself. Jillian is getting the word out there about how harmful all of these processed foods are to our bodies. SO HATERS…eat as MUCH processed foods as you can. I dare you.

I don’t believe her claim for a second.

I wish she would stop yelling at contestants and then later play armchair psychiatrist. It’s really old and she’s really unqualified to counsel people.

She also has one of the most lame and easiest to obtain trainer certifications.

She is an unqualified trainer for this show. She has a very non compliant certification. She is also not a psychologist and should quit trying to act like one.

@Becky- Why is she a fraud for saying she doesn’t like to work out? I don’t always like taking care of patients, but I still do it. It isn’t called a job for nothing. If it were fun, it would be called “fun”, not work.

@Alicia; You do not know me, so kindly do not try to analyze my reasons for not caring for Ms. Michaels. I am neither overweight nor feeling guilty about my eating/exercise habits. FYI I run marathons and go to the gym every day. I eat healthy and most likely wear a far smaller size clothing than you. Just because someone does not care for this annoying woman’s personality doesn’t make them any less fit. Grow up.

You haters are so stupid. I don’t read an entire article on people or things that I don’t like and then make hateful comments. Losing weight is very difficult, and for my personality it takes a person like MyJillian to inspire me. I can certainly do it myself, I am 45 years on this earth and I really have learned a few things. I also know that haters are the saddest people ever and you will never learn and grow. Sad, really.

People disliking her is funny and i cant urn it around and say the same to those who like to throw hate out . Those same people doing that are the ones who are soo unhappy about themselves . Why not change yourself inside and out and believe me you’ll feel the difference. Jillian has every right to say that she hates working out. She has PCOS and I’ve heard her mention that it was a flaming pain to get down to a healthy weight as an active teen. She knows her stuff. Call her annoying, but she has lived through the challenges. Unlike so many “trainers,” she wasn’t born a skinny mini; she had to earn it.

It always amuses me when people (me included, probably!) think that they know someone, and what makes them tick, based on one comment! Like ‘Alicia’ (below) has concluded that “If you dislike [Jillian Michaels], it’s because you’re feeling guilty about your own lifestyle and those extra pounds you’re carrying” rather than the simple fact that …. having just seen JM for the first time on ‘Sweat Inc’…… she struck me as being really quite nasty : imperious, short tempered, defensive, and bratty. None of which has anything whatsoever to do with my own weight and self esteem, both of which happen to be OK.
