Cheryl Hines and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made family tradition a big part of their wedding, right down to the cake.

For their reception, which took place on Saturday at the Kennedy compound in Hyannisport, Massachusetts, the couple chose a 4-tiered cake from Montilio’s Baking Company of Boston.

“We’ve done a lot of Kennedy weddings throughout the years,” says owner George Montilio, who worked with the bride over the two weeks leading up to the ceremony to create the perfect design.

“We went back and forth over the phone about [potential] styles. Cheryl sent me some nice pictures, and we emailed back and forth about different wedding cake designs. It was a collaboration.”

The result: A gorgeous confectionery creation complete with the Hines’ choice of pale pink accents and hand-painted blue flowers etched in gold. Taking into account the notoriously large Kennedy clan, the cake also feeds “around 250 people.”

The “presidential white” with white buttercream cake even added a touch of personal history – for both the groom and the baker. “We’ve done a lot of inaugural cakes in our history and we have this white cake that is very famous in our business and we call it presidential white,” says Montilio of his family’s 65-year cake company. “My father did John F. Kennedy’s inaugural cake.”

Talk about a personal touch!

The Latest Craze in Disco Styles Is See-Through Jeans—but Beware of Foggy Bottoms

Posted on

On a clear day, you can see forever—or at least that’s the wicked thought behind L.A. designer Agi Berliner’s transparent idea: see-through jeans. Exhibitionists notwithstanding, most folks wear them over bathing suits or as attention-getting evening wear with halters, garter belts and body stockings. Created for the disco crowd, the $34 jeans are selling like, well, hot pants. In just six weeks, 25,000 pairs have already been sold in such major department store chains as Macy’s, Bonwit’s and Saks.

“What’s limiting American designers is that we’re afraid to do something different,” says Berliner, 32, a Hungarian émigré who fled with her family to the U.S. in 1956. Agi thought up the gimmick in London while marveling at the way plastics were being employed by designers of punk fashion. In her L.A. office, where she designs for La Parisienne junior sportswear, Agi spent five days on the phone and six weeks testing to come up with the right plastic.

Agi herself tried out the French-cut jeans with the zipper in front, and quickly found several problems: Some plastics tore away from stitching, others wouldn’t bend and all fogged with perspiration. The ideal material proved to be a vinyl supplied by a bookbinder. The steam was eliminated with a series of vents behind the knees and in the crotch. “They’re no hotter than polyester pants,” claims Agi, “and if you wear them with tights, they won’t stick to your legs.”

Whatever the discomfort and despite the problem of Saturday night feverishness, discomaniacs report one major advantage of the plastic pants: no laundry bills. To keep Berliner’s see-through jeans clear, all the wearer needs is a little Windex.

is it plastic? cardboard? metal?

family traditions … corruption, greed, hypocrisy, prevarication, procreation …

Those flowers belong on a different cake.

TinaV on

I am sorry, but those flowers look like painted cardboard. Hopefully, they got the ‘this looks awful and cheap discount.’ The color of pink is only nice thing about it.

What an adorable beautiful cake! It looks delicious. I want a piece!🙂

Would have been far nicer without those flowers…….they look cheap!

This woman headed for heartache. Just look at his expression … not so happy. He is probably plotting a redevous with some little piece he has on the side.

Lollipop on

Many of this rich people have the cheesiest taste.

Meshelle on

I don’t mean to put it down, but that is one ugly cake, I agree with the other comments that it looks cheap and fake…… They could afford much better than that….at least she looked pretty in her dress.

Too bad Uncle Ted wasn’t around to get snockered and make a move on the bride.

I agree, the flowers look like cardboard. Would have looked more elegant with real white flowers. But Hines doesnt have much class so i’m not surprised.

Ugly, tacky, tasteless and over the top are more along the lines of this wedding cake. Good thing it won’t be Bobby’s last one.

To each his own.

It’s beautiful!

The should have used one of the cake companies on TLC. This is not an impressive cake. Those flowers aren’t even edible.

I’m not a fan of these highly-structured architectural cakes. They look fake. I like cakes that are obviously frosted with a nice buttercream, a cake that looks like it will be totally yummy when it’s cut. That looks like it was assembled from a kit from IKEA.

Cardboard sample cake sitting on filthy table….

…come on People Magazine, you can do better than this.

Selena on

That is one butt ugly cake, and I’m guessing it didn’t taste too good either.

It looks like something KMart would sell, it looks like cardboard and those blue fake flowers look totally corny. Ugly cake, with all that money this is the best she could do? I were the cake maker I’d be embarrassed to show this ugly thing. Don’t think the advertisement of this will bring them much business, I wouldn’t buy from them seeing this, seriously, one of the ugliest wedding cakes I’ve ever seen!

How appropriate… fake cake for a fake couple.

lisa on

I love the cake, but you’ve got to be out of your mind to marry a Kennedy man.

I’ve heard about how rude people can be on the Internet. It’s obvious that the kind of person who reads People magazine is an uneducated hater. Let this couple enjoy whatever happiness they have…the cake is interesting! It is entirely edible and I suggest that you try to make one yourself…before you tear down someone who worked for days. Bad taste? Let’s look at YOUR body, closet, etc. Yikes. Bustier dresses are tricky to fit at the bustline. What horrible nasty lives you have.

Nice traditional cake. Flowers not that great

That cake is UGLY!!!!

i’ am so sorry, but, but,—they are both ugly! whew!!

Millie Bea on

Wow that’s some kind of ugly. And fake looking.

Super Ugly Cake. Just goes to show you that even rich people have bad taste. I would have been disappointed if he showed up with that at my wedding. Blue flowers look out of place and cheap.

JP on

Very ugly cake! I feel for her being married to him. Life of unhappiness.

charlotte on

Looks beautiful, but not edible?!?!

I just really dislike these too…I can’t help it.

UGLY CAKE – matches the couple – U G L Y

“PEOPLE.com reserves the right to remove comments at their discretion.” REALLY?! You post every comment no matter how mean! What “discretion”?

Michelle on

Totally not impressed. They could afford any kind of cake they wanted. My wedding cake from a supermarket bakery put that thing to shame. Money does NOT necessarily buy taste.

You are all crazy!! This cake is a work of art!!! It stands out – so different then a basic cake!! Amazing!! I was stunned to think not only is it edible.. It is gorgeous ! It takes a unique couple to choose this cake and an artist to create it! Love the colors etc. amazing!!!
