Phillip Phillips and his wife Hannah Blackwell are southern sweethearts through and through.

After exchanging custom vows under a huge oak tree on the Resora Plantation in Albany, Georgia, the newlyweds celebrated their new union with 250 of their closest family and friends with delicious food from Merry Acres Catering.

“That’s going to be the fun part,” the American Idol winner, 25, told PEOPLE exclusively before his Oct. 24 wedding (photographed by Jay Houston of Click Photography). “A lot of Southern — probably not healthy — but delicious food.”

The couple, who met nearly seven years ago at a charity event for Phillips’ sister’s organization Mission Change, chose to have buffet stations instead of a sit-down dinner.

Catering director Lynne Ranew-Mertins worked with Phillips to create a truly Southern menu that included bacon and tomato sandwiches, okra rollups, mini country ham biscuits, shrimp and grits and bacon-wrapped water chestnuts.

The couple also chose to have a mashed potato bar at the reception. “Her daddy and Phillip had the best time playing with the menu,” Ranew-Martins—who’s been catering for 40 years and worked with her team for three days on the wedding fare—tells People. “Phillip was so excited when I was talking to him about the food. A lot of grooms don’t care that much, but he did!”

“We’re just simple people,” Blackwell, 23, said of their reception. “It’s a little fancy, but not too fancy. All the flowers are really natural flowers, like really light pink or ivory, [and we wanted] just really simple food. The food was Phillip’s project!”

Instead of having a traditional groom’s cake, Phillips chose to serve miniature hot skillet chocolate chip cookies with a scoop of ice cream on top. “I’m really more excited about that than probably getting married,” he joked.

And Ranew-Martins made sure to sneak the groom one of the cookies while he was mingling at the reception. “I took him a cookie and ice cream and hot fudge, and he said ‘Oh, that looks great!'”

The couple also had a twist to their multi-tier wedding cake, which was adorned with fresh flowers by local florist Kay Thompson. “We’re big foodies, so my bridal cake is actually yellow cake with chocolate icing, which they said is so not traditional to have chocolate icing because it won’t be white, but I like chocolate,” says Blackwell.

“The simplicity of it was so nice,” says Ranew-Martins about the big day. “Phillip and Hannah chose to use all local people, and that was something that made a difference to all of us that were working on it. It was a beautiful wedding.”

The Latest Craze in Disco Styles Is See-Through Jeans—but Beware of Foggy Bottoms

Posted on

On a clear day, you can see forever—or at least that’s the wicked thought behind L.A. designer Agi Berliner’s transparent idea: see-through jeans. Exhibitionists notwithstanding, most folks wear them over bathing suits or as attention-getting evening wear with halters, garter belts and body stockings. Created for the disco crowd, the $34 jeans are selling like, well, hot pants. In just six weeks, 25,000 pairs have already been sold in such major department store chains as Macy’s, Bonwit’s and Saks.

“What’s limiting American designers is that we’re afraid to do something different,” says Berliner, 32, a Hungarian émigré who fled with her family to the U.S. in 1956. Agi thought up the gimmick in London while marveling at the way plastics were being employed by designers of punk fashion. In her L.A. office, where she designs for La Parisienne junior sportswear, Agi spent five days on the phone and six weeks testing to come up with the right plastic.

Agi herself tried out the French-cut jeans with the zipper in front, and quickly found several problems: Some plastics tore away from stitching, others wouldn’t bend and all fogged with perspiration. The ideal material proved to be a vinyl supplied by a bookbinder. The steam was eliminated with a series of vents behind the knees and in the crotch. “They’re no hotter than polyester pants,” claims Agi, “and if you wear them with tights, they won’t stick to your legs.”

Whatever the discomfort and despite the problem of Saturday night feverishness, discomaniacs report one major advantage of the plastic pants: no laundry bills. To keep Berliner’s see-through jeans clear, all the wearer needs is a little Windex.

This whole article is a huge advertisement for the businesses who did the wedding. I’m guessing they volunteered their services for the free publicity? And, that cake looks pretty white to me even though a “foodie” wanted chocolate icing. I wish the couple much happiness. Phillip is a fantastic musician!

I’m a huge Phillip Phillips fan! Congratulations to both Hannah and Phillip! From everything I’ve ever seen or read, I’m really not surprised at how down to earth their wedding was. I’ve admired Phillip right from American Idol when I voted for him. Then I was truly happy to see how happy he appeared to be with Hannah. I’d love to meet both, but either way, I with them PEACE & LOVE!
