Kelly Ripa Reveals Her Fitness Routine: ‘I Have to Work Out for My Body Type’

Kelly Ripa hardly ever skips a workout.

“There are a lot of people that don’t have to work out, and I am so happy for them, but I have to work out for my body type,” she tells PEOPLE. “It’s part of my routine. It’s part of my ritual. It doesn’t just make me look better, but it makes me emotionally feel better.”

Ripa likes to mix up her regimen with a combination of activities, including the dance-cardio class AKT four days a week, SoulCycle two days a week and running one day a week.

“I love the dance class,” says the Live! with Kelly and Michael  host, who has three children with  husband Mark Consuelos. “Because I think I’ve aged out of going clubbing, really, that’s my nightclub. Everybody there is my age, so it’s like a bunch of us old ladies working out.”

The daytime TV star, who’s now the face of the My Unstoppable Mom Campaign from Children’s MOTRIN, also pays serious attention to what she eats, which she revealed in May had completely changed her life. Ripa swears by her high-alkaline diet, a low-acid meal plan that she says is “responsible for [her] not being in pain.” “I actually eat much more on this cleanse than I do in my actual life, but it’s what you eat and how you eat it,” she said at the time.

Flexible yet stuck. Let the weekend begin.

Ripa tells PEOPLE she still follows the diet, though she has made a few adjustments.

“I like to drink coffee. I occasionally will have fish. The alkaline diet is primarily a vegan diet, but I like cream in my coffee. I like to have a glass of wine. So I don’t adhere to it strictly, but when I do a cleanse, it will be seven days, and then I go back to my normal life. But my normal life, like I said, is not that different than the alkaline cleanse.”

That doesn’t mean it’s easier for her to be vigilant about health and fitness than it is for the rest of us. “I think it’s a problem for everybody,” she says. “I just do it. It becomes like any habit. You can make a habit of anything.”

“My sister-in-law told me this a long time ago when I wasn’t working out, and she was running, and I was like, ‘How do you do that? Why do you do that?’ And she said, ‘If we wore our insides on our outside, everybody would exercise.'”

Ripa tries to make a habit out of cooking, too, though admits she has a long way to go.

“I do make a lot of Italian food. My husband likes when I make a roasted, slow-cooked pork with hot chile peppers,” she says. “But I’m not particularly good at it! I think [my family] is just being nice to me. I think they’re trying to encourage me to keep trying.”

“Lucky for me, we have a lot of friends that are still single, like unmarried, and they come over; I think because single men or women are so malnourished…that they walk in and are like ‘Oh my God! It smells amazing in here! What are you making?!’ Like… I just burned a chicken breast. I can’t believe you’re saying that.”

Truth Hurts on

Kelly should get her daughter on this diet . Lola weighs more than her mom . I hate it when parents leave their food for their children to eat . selfish .

Don Trump on

She has no boobs and her hubby f ucks her standing up

MissScarlett on

Lola looks great. Nothing is wrong with her size. Who cares if she weighs more than her mom? She’s not fat by any means.

Lori on

Too skinny in my opinion

Lilly on

Healthy is always good, but grotesquely thin? Well, no.

L on

So skinny…. Lovely blue dress tho….

Edyie on

When Kelly was on the soap, she looked much better. She clearly is way too skinny and that’s not her natural body type. She looks great if you want to look like a 12 year old boy. Her poor daughter, I hope she never tries to look like her mother. She has a little extra weight on her which looks way better than Kelly.

Mrs. B on

She’s very thin with a flat chest, but this is how she wants to look. I wouldn’t want to look like that nor would my husband want a bony wife. To each his/her own.

sunny on

Did they photoshop her leg to look longer in the pic of her at the ballet bar?

Sue on

Truth Hurts, that’s the Latino side of Lola that gave her curves!

Gina on

Not aging well is she? You can’t botox your way out of all the wrinkles around your eyes, and the fact that you look older than your years. So I guess your strict “regimen” isn’t working so well for you!

Meme on

She is waaay too skinny. I don’t believe she exercises, but I do believe that she does NOT eat.

Mike Strahan on

Her Fitness Routine? It’s called starvation!

lmc on

Oh boy, someone’s not aging very well at all.

Kar on

She is ridiculously thin. She really doesn’t look healthy.

Alia on

Some people feel their best when they’re that weight and eat very healthy. She seems like a nice and funny person.

Good Vibes on

Wow, so much negativity! Kelly is the epitome of what it looks like to have a body type that is petite AND fit and at 45yrs old she looks like a true natural beauty. I seriously cannot believe some of you are even bringing her teenage daughter into this conversation. I would love to turn the camera around on to each and every one of you and see how YOU look! Meanwhile I’ll continue getting inspired by my fellow strong, fit women while on my way to my body combat class.
*insert peace sign here*

I used to think that she seemed to be so nice and down to earth…but have been completely turned off against her in recent years. She is, in a word, a complete fake. The constant name dropping, buying the most expensive home in New York City last year, flaunting her wealth, her fawning over Micheal Strahan, giving her rude stares and comments to people in the audience if they don’t “behave” the way she likes- she clearly thinks that she is better than anyone else who makes less or owns less than she does. Every guest star is “her favorite”, every new movie promoted is “her favorite”, the constant kissing up to other celebrities…complete and utter fake. P.S. Yes, it must be sooo hard to stay fit when you have a 10 hour per week job, a personal chef, maid service, car service, and personal assistants. Admire that? NO!!

Mary on

“Good Vibes”- a “true and natural beauty”?? Ha!! Apparently you’ve never watched her show and listened to her talk about her routine botox and having her hair colored! What a fraud!

Anonymous on

She is pretty but too thin. When you hit 40 you need a little extra padding, her face has really aged.

Anonymous on

She has really aged, her face especially. She needs to gain a bit of weight and change her hair colour, it looks fried.

Connie on

That lady needs to eat a cheeseburger…better yet a cow….

Annette on

Just waiting for the day she FINALLY enters rehab. WHY hasn’t there been some sort of intervention already? She a 40+ year old woman that looks like a 12 year old. Being fit is one thing but being a walking skeleton is totally different. What message is she sending to her own daughter and other girls/women? UGH I don’t dislike her in any way, but seriously there are some issues here, be it mental health issues, drug addiction, etc. She needs help, not praise! Its almost painful to look at her these days.

mandii99 on

Kelly is totally obsessed with her diet (which is a type of “cleanse starvation”); she is obsessed with her 7 days a week exercise routines and her necessity to indulge her audience with all the particulars. She lets her audience know when she gets her roots “done” and when she gets her “botox” and her “individual false eyelashes” sessions. However, and this surprises me, the one thing she doesn’t seem to ever consider is skin cancer. She is far too old to still be worshiping the sun. She is covered in “age sun spots”. I’m sure she and Mark are excellent parents, but she is NOT being a healthy role model for her daughter, Lola. Lola is naturally beautiful, her body is perfect and she is the picture of good health. I have always liked Kelly even though there is a lot of self-adulation within her self esteem. There is nothing wrong with that, but it comes across as very self-indulgent. She makes a fortune and she loves her husband and her kids. I have been aware of her since her “All My Children” days. I have to give her a lot of credit for where she is today. She’s worked hard for the money and she deserves all her success. But……………

Molly on

So what is her body type? anorexic?

mimi on

Who cares? Not me!

yuk on

She looks like a skeleton and her daughter is way too overweight. Gross.

I like her but she is WAYYY too thin. She looks much older than her age. Her lifeless, bleached hair doesn’t help at all. Someone is lying to her about how she looks. She needs to put on some weight to take away that old haggard look that comes with being too thing when you’re older, and she needs some color in her hair. Women don’t realize that as they get older, really light hair color works just like gray hair, it’s very aging.

Wow!! What a bunch of meanies. Kellys is an incredible woman. I love her.
