With 2016 on the horizon, it’s time for some major weight-loss inspiration from our six Half Their Size winners, who knocked off an extraordinary, combined 770 lbs.!

Cover girl Casey Foreaker turned to food for comfort after her dad took his life when she was just 20 years old. Using Weight Watchers, Foreaker, 36, is now a slim 115 lbs. and says her dad would be thrilled to see her new lifestyle. “I know that he’s looking down and that he’s proud of me,” she says.

The youngest of the group, Austin Shifflet, 22, was bullied about his weight throughout high school, leading him to drop out at 16 and get his GED. Wanting to make a change, he dutifully followed the Atkins diet and dropped 166 lbs. — and finally got his confidence back.

With her military husband deployed for months at a time, Sarah Beasley drowned her sadness in entire cans of chocolate frosting, driving her weight up to 260 lbs. Using the Beachbody program, she lost 120 lbs. and is committed to her daily, 5:30 a.m. workouts. “It sets my whole day off right,” says Beasley, 27.

A chronic autoimmune liver disease landed Angela Montanez, 35, in and out of the hospital from the time she was a child — and her carb and dessert-heavy diet didn’t help. Inspired by wellness vloggers on YouTube, she started swapping sugar for veggies and fruits and slimmed down to 128 lbs. “I’m healthier than I have ever been,” she says.

At 257 lbs., Heather Patterson was in denial about her weight as her body rebelled. With the arches in her feet collapsing under the extra pounds, Patterson, 43, signed up for Take Shape for Life and steadily lost 10 lbs. a month on the partial meal replacement program. “I feel like I had been in a coma. This is what it’s like to live,” she says.

Living at 275 lbs. meant the opposite for Caitlyn Mannherz, who would waste her days sleeping for 15 hours out of exhaustion. “I just didn’t want to wake up,” she says. At 21, she had enough, and decided to cut out gluten, soy, and dairy, which helped her drop 135 lbs. Now 26, she’s studying to be a naturopathic physician so she can help others live healthier too.

Nice that they lost the weight but they’re all young people – where are the stories about women over 50 losing weight???? Now that’s a tough thing to do.

Losing 50% of their body weight is a great achievement. i am sure all these people are having time of their life now. After procastinating it for years, i also finally started with a weight loss plan last month. I am using a 3 week diet i found on this web page – It has been just 35 days and i have already lost 16 pounds. I know if i stay consistent i can lose 40 pounds (if not half) before summer. I watch the TV version of this today on GMA. The Senior Editor made a very upsetting comment. How those in this issue made changes that anyone can follow and lose weigh with by following their lead. Not everyone can lose weight with jut diet and exercise. I worked hard with a hospital medical program. From March of 2013 to December 2013 I was only able to lose 7 pounds. This was following the strict diet and exercise program of my doctor and his team. At one point I was instructed just to drink 3 protein shakes a day and limit my calories to less then 900 per day. It was not what I was or was not eating or how much I did ( sometimes up to 2 hours per day) but a medical condition that caused the difficult weight loss process. I was told the only way I would be able to loose the weight was from surgical intervention. I put it off for four years because I believed diet, exercise, and education would work for me. Within in 7 months of having Gastric Sleeve surgery I dropped 125 pounds. My BMI and blood work for the first time in years were all healthy normal levels. Why did I put off my only hope in getting healthy for so long? Because people like the Senior Editor at People made me feel like a failure when traditional methods would not work for me. I do not want to down play the hard work away from those in this issue. However, the staff at People need to not exclude a large population with uneducated statements.

@Tracey … losing weight, stopping drugs and drinking, etc… are hard things to break. Addiction, being in a rut, everything is just on autopilot, breaking that cycle is hard and should be applauded. And weight gain isn’t always because a person is lazy. There are health issues that can cause problems. I see one of the ladies talks about a chronic liver issue, which I can relate to as I was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis and to save my liver, I was put on prednisone for almost 1.5 years and have gained the weight of a small child. It’s hard to gain a bunch of weight, see your body change and then attempt to lose the weight that already causes you to be slow and tired.

On April 15 I was 206 pounds. I have worked out at the gym (typically swimming) five days a week for years. Yet, I have put on about 20 pounds over the last 8 or 9 years. I thought I ate healthly. I focused on lean animal proteins, pasta, rice, and some vegetables and fruit. I was very frustrated. I didn’t understand why I didn’t lose weight. I read a book on and it was like a light going off in my head. It really made sense.
I have been following his recommendations since about April 15th. I weighed 190 pounds after three weeks (16 pounds in three weeks). I feel great. I no longer “battle” with food. I don’t worry about how much I eat. I don’t deprive myself of food. I just mainly eat fresh vegetables, fruits, beans and tofu etc. I feel really healthy. My performance swimming has increased and my muscle tone is better.
I don’t see a problem at all following this eating plan forever. Try it. It is life changing. It is not a fad. It makes sense and feels right when you do it (unlike Atkins – which I never tried – it seems unnatural to eat just meat and cheese).
