Planning a Major Home Renovation? The Novogratz Family Shows You How to Throw a Blow-Out Construction Party

Bob and Cortney Novogratz never do anything small. So when they bought their new 1926 castle in the Hollywood Hills they couldn’t just throw a regular housewarming party.

The design duo—and parents to Wolfgang, 18, Tallulah and Bellamy, 17, Breaker, 15, Five and Holleder, 10, and Major, 7—decided to a host a blow out construction party after they’d knocked down the original design of the castle but before they’d started revamping it.

In the second episode of PEOPLE’s new home design web series, The Castle Next Door, Breaker explains, “I think it’s a cool experience for people to kind of see what the house is like way before we do anything to do it.” Adds Bellamy: “I think some people are going to see the house and go, ‘Wow. It needs a lot of work.'”

Because they didn’t have a lot of time to prepare for the party, the family came up with a few simple ideas to spruce up the space. They hung up enlarged photos of what the castle used to look like, put out chalk and paint so people could sign their names on the house before it was repainted, and used a technique called “yarn bombing” to give the trees in the backyard some color.

“The priority was making it safe, making it interesting and letting the bones of the building speak for itself,” says Bob.

The family also brought in a DJ, a margarita truck and invited old friends and new.

“Construction parties are probably more fun than the actual construction,” says Bob, “but it’s a journey like anything and you got to enjoy the whole trip.”

Why can’t they find a newer home to ruin, leave these beautiful
old castle like homes alone. If you want open concepts, your using the wrong home to begin with.

Are they popping out more and more kids for attention and fame? They surely aren’t “making it” on their talent. What they “do” is run of the mill and geared toward placing “junk” in your home to make a statement. They really are awful at what they claim to do.

I usually say to each their own but I have to say that might be the most annoying couple ruining a perfectly good house. Nice waste of paint and yarn it really added nothing to the look of your house. Clearly too much time on this entire family’s hands.

I was pretty sad when I got to the Namco Bandai booth however and found out they only brought their fighting games to be played there, which I didn’t bother to try.
