Awesome (and Healthy!) Gift Ideas for Dad from Celeb Trainer Harley Pasternak
Harley Pasternak is a celebrity trainer and nutrition expert who has worked with stars from Halle Berry and Lady Gaga to Robert Pattinson and Robert Downey Jr. He’s also a New York Times best-selling author, with titles including The Body Reset Diet and The 5-Factor Diet. If you have read my books or follow my blog here on PEOPLE, you’ll know that I have five basic principles for losing weight and keeping it off:
– Eat three meals and two snacks a day with protein and fiber
– Get at least 10,000 steps a day by being more active throughout the day
– Resistance train at least five minutes a day
– Get at least seven hours of good quality sleep
– Unplug/relax for at least one hour a day
The best gift of all is health, so based on my five habits, I’ve developed the ultimate Father’s Day gift guide with ideas in every price range. It wasn’t too difficult to come up with these, because I basically just listed what I’d want (and hopefully that’s not a subtle hint to my wife).
Veggetti Spiral Vegetable Cutter (to make ‘noodles’ out of raw veggies), $19
I love substituting zucchini “noodles” for a high-fiber, low-cal, low-carb alternative to pasta. Plus they’re just fun, and even kids like it!
Greenpan Ceramic Fry Pan set of 2, $50
I love these ceramic pans because you don’t need a ton of butter or oil and they have an easy-to-clean non-stick surface.
Harley Pasternak Blender by Salton, $249
Well I’m biased on this one, but I set out to create a blender with the power of the $500+ blenders at half the price — and we nailed it.
All-Clad Electric Indoor Grill, $299
If you’re a city or apartment dweller, you might not have the luxury of an outdoor grill. This compact version is a perfect substitute!
Be More Active
School’s almost out, so why not spend an hour outside with your pops instead of sitting in front of the TV?
New Balance Minimus 20v5, $99
Get your dad some comfortable, versatile cross-training sneakers that can help him stay active. Bonus: These actually look good, unlike the dreaded “dad shoes” so many of our fathers wear.
Game Golf Digital Shot Tracking System, $135
Instead of getting the links-loving dad in your life a set of golf balls for the umpteenth year in a row, gift him something that can actually help improve his game.
Fitbit Blaze, $199
The latest from Fitbit’s line of fitness trackers, the Blaze has a ton of features (all-day activity and sleep monitoring, heart rate monitoring, GPS, music control and call, text and calendar alerts). Plus, it looks really wearable and cool and you can switch out wristbands.
Bowers & Wilkins T7 Wireless Speaker, $299
Nothing can inspire you to get moving and stay moving better than music. This gorgeous portable wireless Bluetooth speaker goes 18 hours on a single charge.
Light-blocking LED Covers for Electronics, $8
Any light can disturb your sleep — even the LED lights on your wireless router or alarm clock or air filter. These little stickers block 100 percent of light and are easily removable.
Custom Molded Earplugs, $26
Even little noises can disrupt our sleep. These earplugs mold to your ears so they’re more comfortable and less likely to fall out during the night.
Cooling Gel & Memory Foam Pillow, $60
Help your dad be “cooler than the other side of the pillow” every night!
Subscription to FitStar Premium, $8/month or $40/year
Sure he has those dumbbells in the garage, but does he ever use them? This personal training app will guide him through workouts tailored to him. Bonus: If he has a Fitbit Blaze, he can do a FitStar workout with step-by-step instructions right on his wrist.
Weight Bench, $79
You don’t need a gym membership to get fit. If you have a pair of dumbbells and a bench, you can do an infinite number of exercises for every muscle group.
TRX Home Training System, $179
I love this thing. I have one in my home, several in my gym and one that I take on the road with me when I travel. All you need is a door (it comes with an anchor) or a bar or pole to hang it from to do a ton of different exercises.
Subscription to Calm (guided meditation and sleeping app), $10/month or $40/year
Studies show that stress management has a huge impact on our health. Whether the dad in your life could use some soothing sounds for sleep (like beach or rain or a meadow) or some guided meditation for mindful relaxation, this app will help. There is a free version, but the premium version is even better.
Extra Long Eco Yoga Mat, $30
Even if he wouldn’t get within 30 yards of a yoga class, a good yoga mat is great for doing any kind of exercise or stretching on, and this one is extra-long for taller people.
Soothe Massage, $99
It’s genius: massage on demand right to your doorstep. Make an appointment through their app and a licensed, insured massage therapist comes to your home, hotel, office, etc. No need to tip.
